Asia Remains the Driving Force of Global Economic Growth

Despite rising global economic uncertainties, Asia continues to be a key driver of global growth, according to a report released at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) on Tuesday.

Despite rising global economic uncertainties, Asia continues to be a key driver of global growth, according to a report released at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) on Tuesday. The region’s weighted real GDP growth is projected to reach 4.5% in 2025, up from 4.4% in 2024, as stated in the Asian Economic Outlook and Integration Progress report.

BFA Secretary General Zhang Jun emphasized that Asia is fostering new opportunities and has become a stabilizing force for the global economy. Economies like China and the ASEAN region remain resilient, leading in economic growth, trade, and regional integration despite ongoing challenges.

Asia’s economic performance in 2023 surpassed projections by major institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF. By 2025, Asia’s share of global GDP at purchasing power parity is expected to rise to 48.6%. The region has also become a central hub for global foreign investments, with China and ASEAN economies being particularly attractive.

China remains a pillar of global manufacturing, with global trade in intermediate goods relying more on China than North America since 2017. The U.S.-initiated trade frictions since 2018 have not strengthened its position in global value chains, the report noted.

Additionally, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) continues to boost economic integration, driving a 3% increase in regional trade in 2024. A separate sustainability report highlights Asia’s leadership in green technology, with China sourcing 85% of its new energy capacity from renewables.
